On day two at the Battle of Shiloh the Union army is reinforced and launches a counter-attack, leading to victory. Thousands of escaping slaves begin to seek refuge with Union forces advancing into the South, prompting the Union to set up a a contraband camp. The Battle of Antietam takes place, the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. Following the US victory, Abraham Lincoln introduces the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, announcing his intention to declare all enslaved people free by January 1st 1863.
